Five teens inside a Jeep were playing a game, based on ghost legends, when they parked on railroad tracks just after midnight Tuesday morning. “They were playing a stupid game called ‘Ghost Train,’ and the object is to get scared, kind of like telling stories on Halloween,” said Butler County Coroner Jim Akers. “The game was to park on the tracks, let the windows fog up inside and let your mind play tricks on you.” But the game took a deadly turn when a real Amtrak train approached and the driver couldn’t restart her vehicle, Akers said. Three of the teens got out safely, but two girls in a panic couldn’t unbuckle their seatbelts in time. The Jeep’s owner returned to the car and helped unbuckle her friends, just as the train smashed into the vehicle, Akers said. Victoria E. Swanson, 15, and Haley M. Whitmer, 17, both of Poplar Bluff, died at the scene at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. The girls were on summer break from Poplar Bluff High School.

TELSTRA says the failed stream of NASA’s Transit of Venus was due to an “IT issue” and not an Aussie roadworker who severed a Telstra wire. It was first reported that the astronomical event had been impacted by the severing of a fibre optic transit cable by road workers outside of Mataranka, a bit over 1000 kilometres to the north of Alice Springs. The incident yesterday afternoon cut off many Northern Territory Telstra customers south of the town – including Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. NASA’s live feed crossed to interviews with anchormen during the Alice Springs cross. About 2000 “bay stations” were out of action in the NT – cutting landlines, mobile, and internet services. However, Telstra’s spokeswoman has since advised that the streaming problem was unrelated to the transit fibre cut and instead was caused by an “IT issue”. No worried…the next time this happens it’ll be 105 years from now!
A few months back, 18-year-olds David Crossfield and Jordan Morgan were cellmates at Preston Prison in England. David was in for burglary, Jordan was in waiting for his trial on an arson charge. And they decided to ESCAPE. Their plan was to channel “Shawshank Redemption” and tunnel their way out through a secret hole they would dig in the wall. So they used a drawer handle to start scraping through the brick wall of their cell, and hid the debris in a pair of pants. Only they didn’t exactly have the patience for this kind of a plan. In “Shawshank” it took TIM ROBBINS 19 years to tunnel out. These guys gave up in ONE DAY. After just 24 hours of digging they both gave up . . . and ratted each other out. They were both busted for attempting to escape. David got two months tacked on to his current sentence . . . Jordan will do two more months in addition to whatever he gets on the arson charge. Turns out that even if they hadn’t quit, their genius plan would’ve failed . . . they didn’t realize they were tunneling into an enclosed area still inside the prison, NOT the outside.
