If you watch the news, it won’t surprise you that 24-hour news channels tend to overreact when they uncover a new detail in a story . . . and then call it BREAKING NEWS. “Slate” magazine did a test one day last week. Over a four-hour period when nothing very significant took place, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC released a total of 19 BREAKING NEWS ALERTS. They included:
“New details in the Secret Service scandal”, which had been reported on other channels several hours earlier.
The latest jobless numbers from the Department of Labor Statistics, which are released on a regular schedule.
And people at the Air and Space Museum WAITING for the space shuttle Discovery to make its scheduled arrival LATER that day.
