There aren’t many ways to OUTRAGE people quicker than giving a thumbs down to PATRIOTISM and a thumbs up to JUSTIN BIEBER. That’s exactly what happened in New York. And, yep, outrage has ensued. Greta Hawkins is the principal of an elementary school on Coney Island, New York called the Edna Cohen School. June 20th is the kindergartners’ graduation. Their teacher has been teaching them that LEE GREENWOOD song “God Bless the U.S.A.” to sing at their graduation. But Hawkins just decided they can’t sing that song because, quote, “We don’t want to offend other cultures.” However, she DID approve other songs for the five-year-olds to sing . . . including “Baby” by Justin Bieber. Teachers and parents are outraged over that decision. The New York Department of Education says they support Hawkins because it is her decision which songs are and aren’t appropriate.
THIS ISN’T OK….
BUT THIS IS…?!?!
Apparently, CHEERING for your kid at a high school graduation is yet another thing that people can’t enjoy anymore. Are schools afraid it’s going to hurt other kids’ feelings? Check out these two ridiculous cases from Ohio and South Carolina . . . On May 23rd, at Mt. Healthy High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, a student named Anthony Cornist was DENIED his diploma because his family cheered too loud. The principal told him his diploma was held because of, quote, “excessive cheering.” Now they’ve told Anthony he needs to do 20 hours of community service before he can graduate. His family is outraged. GET THE F$@% OUTTA HERE RIGHT?!
But things were even worse for Shannon Cooper of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This weekend she was at her daughter Christin’s graduation from South Florence High School, and she cheered when Christin crossed the stage to get her diploma. And she was ARRESTED for disorderly conduct. The school had announced that anyone cheering would be escorted from the building . . . but the arrest seems pretty extreme.
